Why do we do it?
The world is facing a major crisis because our society is using more energy and resources than we can sustain over the long term. This crisis, also known as a polycrisis, requires urgent and strong action because our growth trajectory is unsustainable.
Taking our lead from eminent thinkers in economics and government our activities are guided by the following insights,
Economy
The economy is a part of society, which is ultimately dependent on nature.
Economic theories that disregard the physical reality of nature are flawed.
The economy should work for the benefit of society.
A society should measure and live within its ecological limits, which can be achieved through setting limits on resource usage and waste production.
Most major problems in the economy are interconnected, requiring a systems approach like system dynamics to address them.
Policy
The precautionary principle should be applied to policies that could result in environmental harm.
It is important to use renewable resources at a rate that allows them to replenish naturally.
We need to ensure that everyone can meet their basic needs, so that nobody is forced to live below the poverty line.
The waste hierarchy, which prioritizes avoidance, reduction, and reuse, should guide our actions in managing waste.
We must transition to a "wellbeing economy" that promotes social justice while respecting the limits of our planet.
Governance
Democracy needs to be continually strengthened, including limiting extreme wealth and its undemocratic influence.
It is better to have a few impactful laws, like setting limits on resource use, rather than numerous laws that overly regulate the economy.
Countries should aim for greater self-sufficiency while also offering support and assistance to the global community.
Each nation should responsibly manage its population growth, and in many cases, reduce population size to minimize suffering and ensure a good quality of life within the limits of the environment.
